To say that Friday night’s match between Adelaide United and Sydney FC at Coopers Stadium is an important match is the true definition of an understatement.
It’s as important as…well let’s just say it really important.
With the Reds currently in sixth position on the ladder and the Sky Blues occupying fifth, a win for either side would all but secure that coveted play-off position.
A loss, however, would really put the cat amongst the pigeons.
Newcastle and Wellington are poised to strike should either team falter and come away with nothing.
The Reds will be nervous, having won just once in the last four games, while Sydney have lost only once in their last five.
Adelaide will need to rediscover the attacking flair that has served them so well this season against a side that can themselves find the back of the net.
Crucial to the outcome of this one will be the fitness of Italian star Alessandro Del Piero, with a decision on the striker’s availability to be made at the last possible minute.
What would football be without drama, eh?
Less interesting, certainly.
Adelaide can take heart from their last game against the Sky Blues, which ended in a 3-0 triumph, and the fact they have such a great record at home this season.
Coach Josep Gombau will also be buoyed by the fact that winger Fabio Ferreira, who was in some doubt after suffering concussion during the match against the Wanderers last week, has been cleared to play.
They will need him as the Reds need to move the ball quickly and creatively.
It was their pace out wide that so troubled Frank Farina’s men the last time the two teams met.
If they’re on, Adelaide have the game to dismantle the Sky Blues, but it remains to be seen whether the pressure of playing for that finals spot will help or hinder them.
There is a lot at stake in this one and it promises to be a cracker.
Do you think Adelaide can get the job done?
