Reds Lose to Roar 1-0

Missed chances have cost Adelaide United the chance to extend its unbeaten run at Coopers Stadium, with the Brisbane Roar defeating the Reds 1-0 on Friday night.

A goal to Henriques in the 18th minute settled the contest, with poor finishing to blame for United’s inability to gain any points from the match.

It’s the first time in more than a year that Adelaide have lost at home, with the Roar the last team to beat them at Coopers Stadium last December.

Influential pair Nigel Boogaard and Marcelo Carrusca were unavailable due to injury and their teammates struggled with a lack of poise without them.

United burst out of the blocks in customary fashion, creating chances through pace and accurate passing, but Brisbane settled quickly.

The visitors handled the onslaught and then counter-attacked themselves, culminating in Henriques’ goal.

The Brazilian found himself in space on the edge of the area before curving in a wonderful shot that struck the inside of the post and hit the back of the net.

The Roar nearly had a second through Dimitri Petratos, but the midfielder’s shot hit the post and the resulting follow-up was blasted over the bar.

Adelaide dominated the second half but just could not put the ball in the back of the net, with Sergio Cirio, Fabio Ferreira and Pablo Sanchez all missing chances to score.

United coach Josep Gombau denied his players had one eye on Tuesday’s FFA Cup final against Perth Glory.

He will certainly be hoping his charges fix their finishing woes by the time they take the field in the inaugural cup decider.

The Spanish mentor will also be sweating on the fitness of Boogaard and Carrusca, arguably two of his team’s most important players.

Regardless, if the Reds want to keep pace in the A-League with the likes of the Glory and Melbourne Victory, they have some work to do.

What did you think of the Reds performance against the Roar?
